Vintage Sterling Silver Gabler Mill ThimbleHelmut Greif * Circa 1984
This magnificent silver thimble has Helmut & Thorvald Greif's mark on the side along with "925" for sterling silver. It was a limited edition and this one is #0039. It also has the date May 1984. Greif bought the Gabler Bros. company and their dies when they closed and this thimble depicts the Gabler Mill, apparently part of the original Gabler thimble factory in Schorndorf, Germany. Gabler's factory was built in 1824 so I'm not sure of the significance of the 1850 date below the mill.
It's in mint condition, in round with no wear or damage and is about an American size 13 (18 mm diameter opening).
It is cast and weighs a very solid 12.1 grams.
This thimble is shown on p. 110 (#480) of the New International Edition of
Thimbles Collector's Encyclopedia
