early every culture on Earth has used some form of divination to seek wisdom about life. In the Celtic traditions of Ireland and the British Isles, one form of divination involved the use of ogham. Ogham was the writing system used by Druids for secret communication,boundary marking, and ritual use. It is similar to the Germanic runes in that each character represents a letter sound, but also an esoteric principle.
Each of the ogham characters, or "fews", corresponds to a sacred tree that begins with that sound, and in turn carries with it the principle that that tree represents. The fews are written or carved along a central line called a "druim", usually written vertically in ascending order. As one example, the first few is"Beith", representing the "B" sound as well as the birch tree. The interpretation of this few when used in divination is renewal, rebirth, hope, etc. - since the birch is one of the first trees to turn green in the spring.
There is still mystery surrounding exactly how the ogham was used in divination by the Druids, but there are some surviving historical clues. One source is the writings of the Roman historian Tacitus, who described the casting small staves, each carved with an ogham few.The staves are cast over a cloth on which are drawn three circles,which represent the three elements of the Celtic worldview, the three realms of the Celtic cosmology, and the three aspects of time, as so:
Water (Sea, the Past)
Earth (Land, the Present)
Air(Sky, the Future)
The ogham fews are cast over the three circles after ritual prayers, andin my own practice all but those which fall completely within a circle are removed. Then the staves are recorded, and interpretation is made according to the meaning of the staves as it applies to a given aspect of a person's life. If one stave falls across another stave, the two are said to be "contingent", or mutually dependent. Those principles impact the person's life as intertwined realities.
