Along with its quarter eagle counterpart, this issue is remarkable for its first use of an incused design and a sandblast or 'matte' finish rather than a polished appearance. This example ideally illustrates a strong matte finish and razor-sharp strike. Yellow-gold surfaces exhibit only the tiniest of marks that are well within the definition of the grade and fail to distract. Only 167 pieces were minted. While matte pieces were not considered very desirable by most at the time, they are highly sought after today. An excellent addition to any advanced collections.
